'Amazing not only as literature but as biography.' —Richard Bernstein, The New York Times , Red Cavalry, Isaac Babel, Michael Dirda, Nathalie Babel, Peter Constantine, 9780393324235
Babel describes the Polish towns, the Cossacks and Red Cavalry battles, the shteles and pogroms against the Jewish population. Red Cavalry or Konarmiya (Russian: Конармия) is a collection of short stories by Russian author Isaac Babel about the 1st Cavalry Army. The stories take place during the Polish–Soviet War and are based on Babel's diary, which he maintained when he was a journalist assigned to the Semyon Budyonny 's First Cavalry Army. Isaac Babel was a witness of history, a partaker of the fratricidal Civil War. And his frightfully and mercilessly graphic Red Cavalry may be considered as a horrifying historical document.

Born in Odessa in 1894, Babel is as great a master of the short story as Chekhov or Hemingway. Most striking of all his work is Red Cavalry, set during the Polish–Soviet War of 1919–21.

Isaac Babel, friend of Maxim Gorky, had been given the role of war correspondent through his connections to the other writer. Gorky saw Babel as needing first-hand experience to improve the quality of his writing.

This is my translation of “Crossing the Zbruch” by Isaac Babel. It is the first story in Konarmiia, or Red Army Cavalry, a collection of his stories on the Polish-Soviet war in the early 1920s.In other translations it has been rendered as “Crossing the River Zbrucz”.
"The Cavalry" (a brief review below) - the most famous of his work. First of all, this is due to the fact that it initially contradicted the revolutionary propaganda of that time.

Isaac Babel was a journalist, playwright, and short story writer, whose works include the Russian masterpieces Red Cavalry and The Odessa Tales. He was arrested and executed in a Soviet prison in Isaac Babel’s prose follows his own mantra. It is fast and spare and chilling. Horrific moments are unadorned, stated, and left to brood in the heart. Born in Odessa in 1894, Babel is as great a master of the short story as Chekhov or Hemingway.
The Collected Works of Isaac Babel fills only two volumes. Many attribute Babel's demise to the brilliant Red Cavalry cycle, which was, indeed, condemned in 7 Jul 2005 Throughout his life Isaac Babel was torn by opposing forces, by the desire both to remain faithful to his Jewish roots and yet to be free of them.
