Abstract We isolated Lactobacillus mucosae NK41 and Bifidobacterium longum NK46 from human feces, which induced BDNF expression in corticosterone-stimulated SH-SY5Y cells, and examined their anti-depressive effects in mice.

Lactobacillus mucosae is naturally found in the gastrointestinal tract of humans and other animals. Past researchers have studied this probiotic bacteria under various environmental conditions, and in competition with other bacteria. The study, for the first time, reports the efficacy, safety and probiotic properties of two Lactobacillus mucosae strains, Lact. mucosae SRV5 and Lact. mucosae SRV10 isolated from donkey milk. All major in vitro screening assays were employed to evaluate studied strains.
In this study, we characterised a novel lysophospholipase (LysoPL) from the L. mucosae LM1 strain. The gene, LM-lysoPL, encoding LysoPL from L. mucosae LM1 was cloned, analyzed, and expressed. LM-lysoPL contained a conserved region and catalytic triad motif responsible for lysophospholipase activity.

The potential probiotic benefits of Lactobacillus mucosae have received increasing attention. To investigate the genetic diversity of L. mucosae, comparative genomic analyses of 93 strains isolated from different niches (human and animal gut, human vagina, etc.) and eight strains of published genomes were conducted. The ability of probiotics to adhere to mucus and intestinal epithelial cells has been deemed important in achieving optimal probiotic effects in vivo. Lactobacillus mucosae is a rod shaped species of lactic acid bacteria first isolated from pig intestines. It has mucus -binding activity. The species is an obligate anaerobe , catalase -negative, doesn't form spores and is non- motile .
